The intonation of polar questions in two central varieties of Italian
نویسنده
چکیده
The intonation of Italian can vary according to pragmatic and sociolinguistic factors. This paper presents an analysis of the localised intonational events conveying the pragmatic meaning of interrogation in two regional varieties of Italian (Rome and Perugia). Data show the type and the distribution of the accents and the boundary occurring in interrogative tone groups selected from map-task dialogues. Results imply consideration about systemic, phonotactic and realisational aspects of the intonational system(s) of Italian, mainly regarding the marked units, their distribution and the differences related to diatopic variation. They also seem to confirm the existence of different patterns related to different kinds of questions (informationseeking vs. confirmation-seeking questions), which has been shown for other varieties of Italian.

This paper presents the phonetic analysis of the intonational patterns conveying the pragmatic contents of continuation and/or marking syntactic relations in Rome and Perugia Italian: data show the type and the distribution of accents and boundaries occurring in spontaneous task-oriented dialogues. Results imply considerations about issues concerning systemic, phonotactic and realizational aspe...
متن کاملPerception of questions and statements in Neapolitan Italian
This paper addresses the problem of the perception of two different pitch accents in Italian which signal two utterance types (interrogative and declarative). The questions asked concern whether the major perceptual cue to this category distinction involves only the temporal alignment of the high level target with the syllable or if the category percept also depends on the presence of a rising ...
متن کاملYes/No Question Intonation in Urban Najdi Arabic
Research on intonation in spoken varieties of Arabic has revealed a high degree of variability across dialects. Question intonation in particular may be a locus of variation, since the morphological structure of questions itself varies. This study examines the intonational patterns of Yes/No questions in Urban Najdi Arabic. Although it is a widely spoken dialect, intonation in Urban Najdi Arabi...
متن کاملPhonetic and phonological imitation of intonation in two varieties of Italian
The aim of this study was to test whether both phonetic and phonological representations of intonation can be rapidly modified when imitating utterances belonging to a different regional variety of the same language. Our main hypothesis was that tonal alignment, just as other phonetic features of speech, would be rapidly modified by Italian speakers when imitating pitch accents of a different (...
متن کاملFunctional trade-off between lexical tone and intonation: typological evidence from polar-question marking
Tone languages are often reported to make use of utterancelevel intonation as well as of lexical tone. We test the alternative hypotheses that a) the coexistence of lexical tone and utterance-level intonation in tone languages results in a diminished functional load for intonation, and b) that lexical tone and intonation can coexist in tone languages without undermining each other’s functional ...
